About:
Wilson is a comprehensive public high school with a proud tradition of excellence. In addition to our core curriculum, Wilson offers Advanced Placement courses and advanced level courses in English, science, mathematics, computer science, music and art, foreign language and social science. Rigorous programs are also available in marketing, visual and performing arts, computer science, and professional technical education. At the 9th grade level, teachers team for global studies and English in our Freshman Humanities Seminar program offering the support of a smaller learning community as freshman students transition to high school. We offer electives in all six Career Pathways, although our areas of strength in these are: Arts and Communication, Business and Management Systems, Human Resources and Industrial Engineering. Our programs allow students to pursue a rigorous course of study and encourage high academic performance and intellectual growth while also allowing students who excel in fine and performing arts to develop their gifts.
Before and after school programs
- Football, cross country, soccer (men & women), volleyball, dance team, wrestling, rally, basketball (men & women), swimming, baseball, softball, track, golf, tennis, lacrosse, Speech and Debate, Model United Nations, Mock Trial, National Honor Society, student publications, many student interest & service clubs.
Community partnerships
- STEP Technology, Inc., Intel, US Forest Service, Oregon Department of Transportation, Oregon Health & Sciences University (OHSU), Fred Meyer, US Bank, Nike, Reed College, Lewis & Clark College, Portland State University, Portland Community College.
Student learning environment
- Emphasis on academic excellence, critical thinking, development of lifelong learning skills and high expectations for all students while fostering self-esteem, personal responsibility and self-discipline.
- WHS puts a strong emphasis on completion of the CIM certificate. Sophomores meeting or exceeding benchmarks in reading, writing, math and science range from 65 to 80 percent.
- Programs target student proficiency as set forth by the Oregon State System of Higher Education, exemplified by interdisciplinary curriculum and instruction, cooperative learning, multicultural education, inclusion and collaboration.
- High levels of achievement as measured by the SAT and ACT national tests. 2005 SAT results showed double digit gains over previous years.
- Wilson's strong academic program prepares students to go
either into the workforce or higher academic pursuits.
Over the past five years, 80% of Wilson graduates have
indicated they will attend two- or four-year colleges. - Diverse student body: ethnic, religious and cultural.
- A college preparatory, Advanced Placement and honors curriculum provided at a four-year high school accredited by the Northwest Association of High Schools and Colleges.

Curriculum components
- A broad range of electives are offered; students may choose further electives and specialized offerings by enrolling in part-time cooperative programs available through high schools, colleges and universities.
- Opportunities to learn outside the classroom include Multnomah ESD Outdoor School Program, apprenticeships in science and engineering and many programs at area universities.
- Emphasis placed on academics:enrollment in English, foreign language, mathematics, science and social studies is high.
- Graduation requirements may be met in regular or accelerated courses.
- Advanced Placement courses offered in calculus, US history, government, economics, world history, statistics, English literature and composition, music theory and studio art. Advanced courses also available in biology, chemistry, environmental science, computer science, French, Spanish and German. Courses prepare students to take AP Exams.
Parent and family support
- Volunteer coordinator; families and community members help coordinate school activities, volunteer in classrooms and study centers, accompany students on field trips, etc.
- Woodrow Wilson High School encourages family/community involvement as an essential component of student success.
- Families offer support through PTA, volunteers and Booster Club. Wilson Site Council consists of teachers, administrators, parents, community members and students.
Special programs and features
- Outstanding physical plant: modern brick building with three floors and an elevator on over 20 acres of a park-like setting; wide halls, spacious cafeteria and gymnasium, auditorium, music facilities, choir and drama rooms, Portland Parks and Recreation outdoor swimming pool on site, lighted football stadium with eight-lane all-weather surface track, courtyard, tennis courts and handicapped accessibility.
- Counselors monitor academic development and attendance, foster self-esteem and cultural awareness, and enhance success of minority student population.
- The library features Macintosh and IBM-compatible computers that are connected to the Internet.
- State-of-the-art computer technology in publications, science, library, business, math and writing labs.
- Special Education programs help assure that students have opportunities and assistance to maximize learning potential.
