Before and after school programs
- Performing arts: dance, choir, studio production, piano,

Student learning environment
- Advance placement courses in Chemistry, Art, Social Studies
and English are available for accelerated students. - A four-academy approach (see special programs and features
below) to creating smaller schools within the larger school
support Jefferson's goal of increasing involvement between
teachers-students-families and allows students
opportunities for higher levels of success. - 85-minute block schedule supports the goals of the Oregon
Education Act for the 21st Century; curriculum and
instruction goals target interdisciplinary teaching,
multicultural education, authentic assessment, school-to-
work transition and life-long learning. - Academic and support programs emphasize college
preparation. Student leadership, activism and
accountability nurtured by the school community. - All special education staff have been trained to
teach "Corrective Reading" and provide instruction to
students experiencing reading difficulty and who have not
met the state reading benchmark. - Schoolwide Title 1 program.
- Sylvan Learning Center Lab - On site for literacy tutorial
for students reading below grade level in Grades 9 and 10.
Students may attend the lab for tutoring two hours weekly. - A PLATO CIM math lab is in place. All math instructors have
been trained to deliver special services to students in
math via the computer. Students are able to work
individually and to work on specific skills required to
meet the state math benchmark. - A newly created 9th grade academy focuses on students
needing to meet the state benchmarks in reading and math by
providing small group instruction.
Curriculum components
- Cross-disciplinary goals support and prepare students to be citizens of the world who respect diversity; the integration of technology enhances daily teaching and learning.
- Coursework helps students develop understandings and knowledge about scientific processes and principles, social systems and issues, history, language and communication, and the arts.
- Challenging courses provide students with opportunities to think critically, logically and creatively and to identify, analyze and solve problems.
- Students' diverse learning styles are addressed as they master basic skills in reading, writing, speaking, listening, observing, analyzing and computing.

education, curriculum development to meet CIM/CAM
standards, thematic teaching, authentic assessment and best
instructional practices.
Parent and family support
- Parents/families participate in the Jefferson Site Council, Senior Class Parents Committee, Parent-Student-Teacher Organization, Moms' and Dads' Club, Self Enhancement, Inc. (SEI), Private Industry Council, Touchstone Project, Jefferson Caring Community, local churches also involve Jefferson family/community members.
- Community-based programs providing support to Jefferson students include SEI, Project Plus, Urban League, Youth Outreach, Rotary Club, I Have A Dream, Athletic Advisory Committee, and Site Council.
Special programs and features
- The Health Sciences/Biotechnology Magnet Program supports
systemic school reform and helps students meet rigorous
content and performance standards; provides a continuum of
high-quality curriculum and instruction linking middle
schools with high school; and, provides courses of
instruction that prepare students for a successful
transition to post-secondary education, training and future
careers in medicine, allied health, biotechnology and
related fields. - The Engineering Technology Academy is a four-year program
that prepares students for entry into apprenticeship
programs in the trades, trade schools, community colleges
or four-year institutions of higher learning. - The Performing and Visual Arts Magnet offers a wide array of courses in dance (Jefferson Dancers/Modern Dance Lab), piano, studio production, television, theater, photography, and visual arts
- Business Financial Services Academy is a unique school-
community-business partnership designed to develop business
leadership skills. - All Academies actively involve students in work experiences
and career exploration. - The Talented and Gifted Program(TAG),meets the needs of
academically, intellectually and artistically identified
students in mainstream classrooms and in extra-curricular
settings. - Jefferson Caring Community Family Resource Center and
numerous other helper organizations provide social services
and community resources to Jefferson families. - Teen Health Clinic provides medical services to students.
