Woodmere Vision Statement
Woodmere School is a community of learners who care for each other. Together we accept the responsibility to challenge and empower all students to be the best they can be by building academic skills, social skills, and self-esteem.
Extended Day Program:
In partnership with Portland Impact, Multnomah County Library, Community Cycling Center, Oregon Zoo, RACC (Regional Arts & Culture Council) and Chess for Success, Woodmere provides the SUN (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) Extended Day Program Monday-Friday from 3:00-5:00.
Classes include:
Chess Club, Sports Club, Homework Club, Junior Great Books, Drama, Basketball, Computer, Spanish Culture, Ceramics, Crafts, Table Tennis, Bike Club, Urban Nature Overnight Program (with Oregon Zoo) and a variety of other classes.
Business partnerships:
Business organizations support the school through direct resources and through employee time volunteering in SMART (Start Making A Reader Today). We have 60 volunteers on a weekly basis.
In addition, Woodmere enjoys a business partnership with Portland Impact, a non-profit service agency for family support.

Curriculum components:
A variety of teaching methods target students with different learning styles.
Early intervention in reading through Reading Recovery.
Instructional support for students through services from Special Education, Chapter I, English as a Second Language (ESL), and Talented and Gifted (TAG) programs.
Opportunity for mixed-age learning environments within classrooms and school.
Parents/Family Support:
Woodmere is supported with a half-time Multnomah County Touchstone position, who provides in-depth support of families. Families are welcomed and supported at Woodmere in the education of their children.Families support Woodmere through PTA , School Advisory and the Site Council; families are encouraged to volunteer at school and are welcomed in the Parent/Community Volunteer room daily.
Family nights at school are held a minimum of once a month and events include: picnics, learning to read with your child, clothing give-aways, all-school dance, math, science, and game nights, book fairs, multicultural family festivals and a carnival. Family participation and school success are recognized and fully encouraged.
Special programs and features
Woodmere has a large community (45%) of children coming from families whose home language is not English and whose cultural background is varied. Staff support diversity of backgrounds, encourage participation of all families at school.
Project SMART
(Start Making a Reader Today) provides business volunteers who read with
primary students twice a week. The reading program enhances individual support
and encouragement to young readers.
Learn for Life program supports students in Grades
3-5 with special weekly activities focusing on responsibility, opportunity and
cooperation.
Peer Helper Program, coordinated by Woodmere's child-development specialist's office, provides support, opportunities for students to get involved in community service and assisting others at school. Activities include peer helper, safety patrol, cafeteria assistance, recycling, tutoring, library and classroom assistance.
