Scrubland in California (c) L.F.

Mediterranean is one example of scrublands, places where hot summers combine with cool, moist winters. There are rarely tall trees in these regions because of the dry, scorching summers. Unlike a desert, the nearby seas bring in refreshing air from other parts of the world during winter. Therefore, plants and animals in the scrublands must adapt to a variety of conditions.

Depending on the part of the world, scrublands support many types of animals, including seed-eating rodents, insects, and reptiles. Some of the species only migrate to the area during winters. They include the Californian chaparral, and collared peccary. Some Mediterranean islands once had some unique animals such as dwarf elephant, dwarf hippopotamus, and dwarf deer.
