African Savanna

From a Spanish word meaning "treeless plain," the savanna regions are huge expanses of grass with only scattered trees. Another characteristic of a savanna is low rainfall, but not low enough to be categorized as a desert. Massive herds of grazing animals along with predators such as the lion, leopard, and cheetah all inhabit the savanna.

Because savanna is found in tropical latitudes, the temperatures are always high. Most of the rain falls in two periods, which may flood low-lying areas. Over this wet season, plants grow quickly. The large amount of plants attract a variety of herbivores. East African savanna has more than 20 species of grazers, though some are only temporary inhabitants. The Australian savanna has lots of marsupial grazers like kangaroos and wallabies. South American savanna has few species, including rodents, rhea, and deer.
