Temperate forests used to cover large areas of eastern North America, Europe, and Asia. Deciduous and coniferous trees blanketed the land. However, human activity has decimated the forests, and only isolated regions of the forests can be found in the northern hemisphere today.
The tree habitats support many animals. North American forests has five times as many species of trees as the forests of Europe. These forests are the home of rare animals including the Rhysodes sulcatus beetles and the ivory-billed and red-cockaded woodpeckers. Another rare animal is the white-backed woodpecker in western Europe. Animals which live in the forest clearings include birds and insects like chaffinch and speckled wood butterfly.
