Islam

610 C.E.
  • Muhammad founded Islam in Saudi Arabia when he heard Allah's message.
  • Muhammad then taught his family and friends to worship Allah.
622 C.E.
  • Muhammad taught many people to worship one God, Allah, instead of many Gods.
  • As Islam grew more and more popular wealthy people forced him to move from Makkah where Islam was founded. They moved north to Madinah.
624 C.E.
  • The Muslims fought their first battle against Makkans. Even though the Muslims were greatly out numbered they still won.
629 C.E.
  • The Muslims conquered Makka. They now saw Muhammad as a real leader.
632 C.E.
  • Muhammad died in Madinah at age 63. Shortly before his death he visited his very close friend named Abu Bakr. Abu asked him to take over the prayers he was conducting but Muhammad refused because he felt too sick. 
633-634 C.E.
  • Two main branches of Islam formed. There were the Sunnis and the Shi'ites. 90% of today's Muslims are Sunni Muslims and the other 10% are Shi'ites.
634 C.E.
  • Abu Bakr took over Muhammad's spot but only lasted 2 years because he died. Before he died he elected 'Umar to take over his job.
644 C.E.
  • 'Umar was murdered. Before he died he developed a form of election to elect the next successor.
645 C.E.
  • Ali' and many other people collected all of Muhammad's teachings and transcripts to create the Qur'an. The Qur'an is a holy book for Muslims.
691 C.E.
  • Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem was finished. The Rock marks where Muhammad made his night journey into heaven. Muslims consider Jerusalem a holy city.
940 C.E.
  • Ibn Muqlah died. He was the inventor of the six most common Arabic scripts.
1270 C.E.
  • Qutb-Ud-Din Aybak died of injuries in a polo match. He was a founder of Islam in India.
1918 C.E.
  • World War I is finished and the Ottomans, a huge Muslim Empire, lose causing the empire to divide.
1924 C.E.
  • The Ottoman Empire died out completely.
1930 C.E.
  • Black Muslim was founded by Wali in Detroit. Many followers believed he was Allah in person.
1952 C.E.
  • Malcolm X becomes a Muslim Minister after being released from jail. He was a leader in the civil rights movement.
1962 C.E.
  • Algeria became independent after being ruled by France. Algeria has the crescent star on their flag which is the main Islamic Symbol.
1964 C.E.
  • Cassius Clay became a Black Muslim. He changed his name to Muhammad Ali.
1969 C.E.
  • Maummar Gagaffi took power in a military coup and produced his own political system in Libya.
1979 C.E.
  • Iranian revolutionaries over through the Shah and formed an Islamic Government. Ayatollah Khomeini became the new ruler. He was very anti-western.
