In 1928, the Mt. Scott Bank, in downtown Lents, was running business as usual when two cars pulled up in front of the bank. Four men hopped out of the cars and strode inside. The owner, A. J. Demorest had taken his rifle to work with him because he had heard of recent robberies in the area. His hunch proved right, the four men strode into the building wielding automatic pistols and ordering everybody to raise their hands. Demorest's wife, who also worked at the bank, caused a disturbance which gave A. J. enough time to shoot and kill two of the four assailants-J. R. Benton and Fred Williams. The other two robbers were never caught.
