Volunteer Opportunities for the
PTA
Laurelhurst PTA has openings on the PTA Board every school
year. At the end of each school year your
help is needed to fill the openings for the next school
year! Please call or leave a message in the PTA box in the
office if you are willing to help. We elect a slate of
officers at the last PTA meeting in May of each school year.
The following is a description of the PTA board and
the responsibilities of its members.
- President: Oversees the activities of the PTA.
Is an ex officio member on all committees, except the
Nominating Committee. Represents the PTA at school and
community functions. Along with the treasurer, is jointly
responsible for the financial well-being of the Laurelhurst
PTA.
- Vice-President Ways and Means: Handles
fundraising activities of the PTA. May be called upon to
temporarily assume the place of the president. Acts as an
aide to the president.
- Vice President Membership: Manages the
membership enrollment for the PTA. Also acts as a guide to
those who are eager to learn and become involved with the
PTA.
- Vice President Programs: Develops effective and
informative programs for members of the PTA. Provides PTA
programs at meetings. May coordinate special programs as
needed.
- Secretary: Is responsible for keeping accurate
records of the proceedings of the association. Is to be at
all Laurelhurst PTA meetings.
- Treasurer: Along with the president, is jointly
responsible for the financial well-being of the Laurelhurst
PTA. Treasurer is the authorized custodian to have charge
of the funds of the PTA organization.
- Volunteer Coordinator (Senior and Junior positions):
Run the volunteer program at the school. Coordinates
police background checks, matches need of the school with
volunteer interests.
In addition to Board positions, there are also
numerous committee positions that are available. Here's a
list of all of the committees at Laurelhurst. Please let
us know if you are interested in being a committee chair
or in helping out on any of these committees.
- Auditor: Audits financial books.
- Block Homes: Finds people to be block homes.
Turns in all the forms for it.
- Book Fair: Manages the preparation and actual
Fall and Spring book fairs. Coordinates all volunteers for
this event.
- Bank Day: Runs Tuesday morning bank day.
Coordinates volunteers. Take money to bank. Has bank
representative attend Carnival.
- Carnival: Oversees the entire Carnival,
including running meetings in preparation for the event.
- Clothing Center: Coordinates volunteers to staff
the clothing center (twice a year). Takes or makes sure
that donations are dropped off at the clothing center.
- Directory: Types the school directory and
oversees the printing of it.
- Fifth Grade Party: Oversees the planning and
implementation of the annual 5th grade party at the end of
the school year.
- Health and Safety: Works with teacher rep. for
safety patrol and coordinates parent volunteers. Addresses
safety concerns that may be brought before the PTA, such as
the "Slow down for the Children" campaign.
- Hospitality: Coordinates the food and coffee for
special events at the school.
- Project Second Wind: Coordinates the annual food
drive in conjunction with the Oregon Food Bank.
- Legislation: Keeps membership informed on
important legislation effecting our school.
- Reflections: Coordinates Laurelhurst student
participation in the National PTA art program.
- Room Parents: Ensures that each teacher has a
room parent. Assist room parents around Carnival activities.
- Rose Show: Oversees the annual Rose Show at
Laurelhurst.
- Run for the Arts: Work with the teacher
representative for this activity at the school. Coordinate
volunteers for that day. Ensure that snacks are available
for participants.
- School Pictures: Coordinate the scheduling of
the school pictures and picture re-take days.
- Sock Hop: Oversee the sock hop. Hold appropriate
planning meetings to ensure volunteers are available to
handle decorations, food, entertainment, etc.
- Sweatshirt and T-Shirt: Coordinate the annual
sale. Help with design, ordering, and distribution.
