Providence and Laurelhurst School (PALS) Partners

Several years ago, Laurelhurst teachers were discussing the various requirements students will face in order to graduate as they progress in school. The teachers focused on community service, and how beneficial it would be to expose students to such activities at an elementary school.Providence Medical Center (PMC), due to it's location close to our school, name arose as a possible arena for students to participate.

When the Laurelhurst Site Council was in the middle of designing and setting up a science lab. After cabinets were mounted, a dedicated phone line was installed, teacher materials from various classrooms were trickling in, but general lab equipment seemed in short supply. PMC was contacted to determine if they were able to provide lab supplies they no longer were using. After digging around at the warehouse where plastics are recycled and extra furnishings and equipment were stockpiled, our lab obtained plastic pitchers, basins, trays, and the magazine rack. Following this, Laurelhurst School's Site Council set up a sub-committee, which included parents, teachers, and the school principal, to work with what was now being called our Providence connection, and their charge was to get better acquainted with PMC. In addition the committee was to seek out ways of creating business/school partnerships with PMC and other businesses.

Providence and Laurelhurst School started to participate in a variety of activities together as follows:

  • Women in History -- Two employees portrayed significant women from Providence's history.
  • Poison Prevention presentations
  • All staff tour of Providence
  • 5th grade facilitation of a survey of Laurelhurst community
Bulletin board display at both sides of survey results
