The Sunnyside Environmental School is an expansion of the Environmental Middle School which began in 1995. The Environmental Middle School cirriculum has successfully moved a diverse student body through the exuberant years of early adolescence through an academically challenging educational model intended to develop a sense of community, responsibility and creativity. The School Board has approved the creation of this model for children in elementary school. This new K - 8 model is being developed at the Sunnyside Elementary site, which is in the Hawthorne neighborhood. The Environmental School is working closely with the current neighborhood school to embrace historical practices that are vital to the neighborhood and its children.
