The Environmental Middle School is a place where students, teachers, parents and community members are members of a learning community, which fosters responsibility, excitement to learn and respect for all living things. Our students choose to come to our school from all over Portland because they:

• Believe they can learn valuable lessons from the world beyond the classroom.
• Know that by participating in service learning, they can contribute to their community while learning.
• Want to belong to a small community where all members of the community work together and appreciate each other's differences.
• Desire an integrated project based curriculum allowing them to work at their own levels and rates of learning.
• Want to garden, go camping, clean-up parks, feed the homeless and sing songs.
• Look forward to getting to know the adults in their school and understand that those adults will value them.
• Want to learn in mixed-aged classrooms.
• Relish the challenge of an academically demanding curriculum.
• Want to have a choice in their educational experience.

The Environmental Middle School is a community of students, educators, neighbors and parents working together to create a safe, nurturing and excellent learning environment for young people. We are a small, multicultural, urban public middle school drawing students from all of Portland's diverse neighborhoods. We are actively teaching a holistic, integrated curriculum. Exploring themes of our many overlapping environments, students develop academic knowledge and skills while demonstrating personal and social responsibility for all living things.

The Environmental Middle School involves 250 students from throughout the City of Portland. It has eight integrated core classrooms with seperate classes for Math, Spanish and Science Lab. The School has a part time counselor, librarian and PR Teacher.
