State Performance
Standards 05-06
At
Abernethy we believe that student achievement cannot be measured
by test scores alone. However, we live in an environment of "school
accountability", and we must recognize that standardized tests
are an inevitable part of our current academic culture.
In Oregon,
standardized tests are administered statewide each year in grades
3 and 5 to determine whether students are meeting established academic
benchmarks in reading and math.
In Oregon,
schools are also rated on a School Report Card that includes: student
performance on statewide assessments, student testing participation, and
student average daily attendance.
Abernethy
is also rated using national standards under the federal law called
"No Child Left Behind". A total of 42 standards need to
be met for a school to meet AYP (or Adequate Yearly Progress) in
order to meet standards under the "No Child Left Behind"
law. There are two ways schools can meet AYP but they must have
enough students to be "statistically valid". Each school
receives its AYP status as a whole, but that's just part of the
status report. Schools also receive their disaggregated AYP status
for subgroups of students based on the following categories: race/ethnicity,
students with disabilities, Limited English Proficiency, and economically
disadvantaged. Abernethy has met all 42 standards and has a designation
of "Met" for AYP.
Due
to the merger of Abernethy in the 2005-2006 school year with the
recently closed Edwards and Richmond neighborhood schools, Abernethy's
ratings will not appear publicly for three years. This block of
time allows Abernethy to adjust to the new population. The data
will still be kept on file but will not be included in public ratings.
The
following data reflects the end of the year progress for students
in grades 3, 4 and 5 for reading and math from Abernethy. It also
covers the writing assessment for grade 4.
THIRD,
FOURTH & FIFTH GRADES:
Reading:
95% of the students met or exceeded the reading benchmark.
