The Salvation Army & Project Return host Open House

December 8, 2000

Join Dr. Ben Canada, Superintendent of Portland Public Schools, at The Salvation Army Harbor Light Center December 11 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., for a special open house honoring Project Return, an after-school program of Portland Public Schools.

"We want to recognize Portland Public Schools for its commitment to helping homeless kids stay in school and keep up when their families are displaced," says Major Neal Hogan, director of The Salvation Army Harbor Light Center. "Project Return has given the children a place to meet and share what they've learned at school, and in doing so, learn from each other."

Project Return placed its first study corner for homeless youth in the family day room at Harbor Light last year, with the goal of providing a quiet place for children to meet after school and get help with homework. The program also places homeless children in schools, provides them with backpacks, school supplies and clothing, and schedules tutors for study corners like the one at Harbor Light Center.

Harbor Light is located at 30 S.W. 2nd Avenue, in Portland. For more information about The Salvation Army Harbor Light Center, call 503 239-1259 or visit their Web site at www.cascadesa.org.
