Board members take a stand on gun safety

Portland School Board members unanimously approved a resolution calling on state and federal officials to take steps to increase school safety through stronger gun laws.

School board members are encouraging elected leaders to develop effective and universal background checks; close loopholes that allow the purchase of prohibited guns or ammunition, or purchase by those who are otherwise prohibited from buying guns; support more effective mental health supports; and introduce a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.
