Grant Constitution Team 2013

The Grant High School constitution team placed first in Oregon's 2013 We The People constitutional law competition, Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Mark O. Hatfield Courthouse in Portland. Next stop, the national finals in Washington D.C.

Nipping at Grant's heels was the team from Lincoln High School -- placing second in the competition. Last year, Lincoln won the national competition.

Combined, the schools have won every state competition since 1987.

Students compete in We the People by answering questions from judges, lawyers, public officials and other experts. Success hinges on skills in research and writing, teamwork and public speaking.

To do well, teams must spend hours covering material in and out of school. The challenge is especially high for new entrants who must find students — and adult helpers — with time, motivation and expertise.
