Dr. Ben Canada, former Portland Public Schools superintendent, died Nov. 6 after a period of declining health.

Dr. Canada joined PPS as superintendent in 1998 and served until 2001. Prior to coming to Portland, he served as superintendent of the Atlanta School District. He retired within the last year from the Texas Association of School Boards after 10 years of service. Dr. Canada and his wife Doris Canada continued to live in Atlanta, their home of many years.

The Canada family is planning to hold a memorial service after the holidays.
