At the time of his death, Dr. Hopson was school improvement officer for high schools at the Houston Independent School District.
Prior to joining the PPS central leadership team, Dr. Hopson was the principal of Franklin High School, principal of Tubman Middle School, and vice principal at Cleveland and Jefferson high schools. His wife, Patricia, is a media specialist with Portland Public Schools, most recently at Grant High School.
In response to the news, Superintendent Carole Smith commented, "Charles was a strong and thoughtful leader with a deep commitment to equity and the betterment of all students. I am keeping in my mind today his warm and ready smile."
A memorial service is Saturday Nov. 24 at 10 am at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, 8501 N. Chautauqua Blvd.
The Oregon Alliance of Black School Educators (OABSE) has set up a Charles Hopson Memorial Scholarship Fund. Those wishing to contribute may mail their checks to OABSE in care of LaShawn Lee a P.O. Box 3109, Portland, Oregon 97203. More than $500 has already been raised.
