District suspends opening of charter school

September 09, 2011

Portland Public Schools leaders notified REAL Prep Charter School administrators and board members late Thursday that the school will not be permitted to open as scheduled Monday, Sept. 12.

The decision to suspend the school opening was prompted by recent reports of financial concerns, school leadership team instability, building safety concerns, lack of evidence of a comprehensive curriculum and questions about trained staff.

The Portland School Board approved a charter for REAL Prep in December 2009 based on its innovative approach, promising curriculum plans, solid community support and mission to serve underserved students in Portland. The approval followed a process defined by Oregon law, board policy and district practice.

Following school board approval of the charter application, the Oregon Department of Education assumed responsibility for monitoring the school’s federal implementation grant.

PPS staff members are contacting students and families to plan for an immediate, seamless transition to another academic setting.
