Marshall High School is closed: A celebration has been held, students have left, and faculty members are shutting their classroom doors one last time. View photos from the last day and details about the building's future use.
More than 1,000 alumni, students, current and former staff members, and community members celebrated the school's history during a three-hour tribute on June 4.
Days later, the school held its field day, where many students took the opportunity to sign yearbooks.
Marshall administrators and teachers host a field day for students June 14. In the short term, PPS will use the building for summer school and professional development.
What now?
Portland Public Schools will use the Marshall building for programs this summer, support services and, in the 2011-12 school year, professional development.
Like other PPS facilities, the public may also apply to rent the facility.
The school district is re-keying the entire building, and will maintain security checks for the campus. Superintendent Carole Smith and the Portland School Board have not laid out plans for Marshall beyond 2011-12.
Continued support for students
PPS staff, parents and partners have worked hard to keep Marshall students on track.
That has included emotional support, such as mental health counseling, along with close monitoring of student attendance and creation of a staff list to help students request letters of recommendation.
Going forward, the progress of former Marshall students will be monitored through site councils or similar groups at their new high schools: Franklin and Madison. Leaders at each school will also create plans to integrate the new students and their families.
A "districtwide vetting committee" also will review the progress of former Marshall students.
More details are in a 32-page report delivered by Sarah Singer, project director for High School System Design, to the Portland School Board on June 13.
At Portland Public Schools, this is our goal: By the end of elementary, middle, and high school, every student by name will meet or exceed academic standards and will be fully prepared to make productive life decisions.
