Inside news – PPS technology chief wins award

May 13, 2010

Nick Jwayad has been named an IT "executive of the year" for his work as the school district’s chief information officer.

The award from Prospera Events, which produces the InnoTech conferences nationwide, recognizes executives who have implemented innovative technology, boosted their employer’s competitiveness and demonstrated “leadership in the information technology community.”

“Since Nick became chief information officer of the district in 2007, he has been the vanguard for leveraging both operational and innovative technologies to improve teaching and learning,” says C.J. Sylvester, chief operating officer of Portland Public Schools.

Sylvester continues: “In alignment with the district's key goals of ensuring all students have access to the relevant tools to be successful at every level, Nick has partnered with our educators to identify and fund significant technology improvements. We are pleased that Nick's achievements are being recognized and honored by his technology peers."

Jwayad’s nomination letter cites ongoing technology improvements at PPS, including the deployment of:

  • An online instructional management system
  • Small-form computing labs
  • Interactive whiteboards
  • Document cameras
  • Interactive response systems
  • Desktop and server virtualization

Jwayad received the award May 6 at the NW CIO Summit and seventh annual InnoTech Oregon, held at the Oregon Convention Center.
