Investigations: Title I Lesson
10 Minute Math, Quick Images

Connie Ford, Title 1 Math Specialist at Rigler Elementary, works with a group of third grade students using Quick Images. Quick Images helps students focus on:

  • meaningful ways to organize and analyze visual images
  • developing concepts about spatial relationships
  • describing patterns and shapes using geometric vocabulary and number relationships

The task is to draw the Dot Pattern shown in the Quick Image into a student journal and then figure out how many dots are shown. Students may change their answers each time the Quick Image is displayed on the overhead.Students then communicate their thinking in their journal and with the other students in the group.

In Number Strings, session 6 from Coins, Coupons, and Combinations, Connie introduces the activity "Strategies for Combining Two Numbers." Students will then build on strategies from this activity to do number strings, combining three or more single-digit numbers.
