Course description:
A performance based course in the techniques used in Jazz Big Band music as well as pop music. This group also performs at football games and basketball games.
Prerequisites:
Students must have 1 or 2 years experience playing an instrument and must be able to read music.
Priority standards and final proficiencies:
A student with a fundamental knowledge of jazz should be able to read a lead sheet, play the chord changes, and be able to engage in discussion about jazz by the end of this course.
Schedule of topics/units covered:
Topics include jazz history, listening skills, chord scales, modes, chords, melodic concepts, basis harmony, and rhythmic exercises.

Highly-able students can gain extra credit by participating the in solo and ensemble festival that is offered by OSSA. Performing a solo there offers a wealth of experience as well as additional credit in this course.

students are expected to arrive to class on time, be prepared with their instrument at all times, keep their hands to themselves, be polite to all other students in the class.
