Register for school this summer

Do you have a new neighbor who needs to register a child for school? Have you enrolled your 5-year-old for kindergarten? Schools are open — but only until the end of June. What then?

Visit the Enrollment and Transfer Center in the Portland Public Schools administration building. The center, located in the Blanchard Education Service Center at 501 N. Dixon St., will be open during the building’s summer hours.

Registration forms are available online, but you must complete the registration process in person. You must bring documentation to register your student, including immunization records, proof of age and proof of residency.

For more information, call the Enrollment and Transfer Center at 503-916-3205, or go online to the Enrollment and Transfer webpage.

Note: All new students who speak a language at home that is not English must have a language assessment in conjunction with registration. Assessments will begin Aug. 15, but you can schedule that appointment now by calling 503-916-5729 or 503-916-5875.

School meals: Plan ahead so your student is fed

Meal prices are increasing 10 cents in 2011-12. Prices by grade are:

PK-5: $2.40
6-8: $2.65
9-12: $2.90
PK-12 reduced price: $0.40

Meal account balances (positive or negative) from the end of last year remain in effect.

It’s not too early to think about your student’s meals this fall.

Meal accounts for continuing students must have a positive balance to eat school meals. Kindergartners and new students must pay for meals the first day of school or have an approved meal application. Starting July 1, you can apply for free or reduced-price meals here. Students who qualified for free or reduced-price meals in 2010-11 must reapply before Oct. 11 to continue to receive benefits — but it’s best not to wait.
