Xtreme Reading

Xtreme Reading is a reading intervention program that delivers research based learning strategies to a carefully selected group of students. Students selected for the intervention program must read at least two years below grade level, but not lower than grade 3.5.  Near the middle of third grade, students become adept at decoding words and that is an essential skill to begin the program.

In this up-coming year of the grant, special education students and ELL students must fit the above criteria, but can otherwise be added to the intervention class at school discretion. Preliminary results for the intervention class have shown promising growth in student reading levels.

The learning strategies that comprise the Xtreme class curriculum include: Word Mapping, Word Identification, Self-Questioning, Summarizing and Paraphrasing, Visual Imagery, and Inference.  Each strategy has been researched and tested by The University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning.  Many of the strategies have 30 years of results behind them.  The two initial strategies help students master difficult, multi-syllabic vocabulary.  The last four strategies are comprehension builders and work across content areas to help students understand complex concepts.

The Xtreme class has an additional component to encourage struggling readers to read outside of class.  The Book Study section of the curriculum invites students to read a variety of works and complete a number of projects to share their reading with other students.  At Jefferson and Young Womens Academy, students have created computer-generated brochures on book study selections.  Students also create power point presentations on their goals for the future and who they hope to become.
