MISSION

The mission of Title VII Indian Education is to enhance the educational achievement and Native cultural awareness of American Indian & Alaska Native students in Portland Public Schools.

 

TITLE VII GOALS

  • To assist in improving the reading, writing, science, & math achievement of Project students in grades K-12
  • To assist in increasing the high school graduation rate for Project high school students
  • To assist in increasing the attendance rate for Project students

PROJECT STUDENT ENROLLMENT

Federal funds are based on the number of enrolled American Indian/Alaska Native students in the Title VII Project.  Approximately 650 pre K – 12 students of documented American Indian/Alaska Native ancestry are enrolled annually.

 

ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS & RECRUITMENT

Student must:

  • be enrolled in a PPS school or contracted program
  • meet federal eligibility requirements (student, parent or grandparent enrolled in a state or federally-recognized Tribe/Band/Nation)

Parent/Guardian must:

  • complete a Title VII Student Eligibility Certification form and return it to the Indian  Education Program office at Jefferson H.S.
  • The Title VII Student Eligibility Certification form can be downloaded from our website   (see below).

  • Advocacy for Project students
  • Talking Circle Newsletter
  • Summer ACE (Academic & Cultural Enrichment--full-day, 4 week Language Arts focus w/ math, science, & cultural arts for elementary students)
  • Back to School Picnic      Basic School Supplies     Northwest Children’s Theater Tickets
  • Native Reading Clubs at selected elementary schools
  • Student/Family Fun Nights, Family Math & Science Nights, Family Literacy Nights
  • Financial Aid, Scholarship, and College Search workshops
  • Saturday Academy Classes (for Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math classes, grades 6-12)
  • Honor Day Celebration (graduation recognition)
  • Tuition support for credit retrieval at Night School & Summer Scholars
  • Cultural Arts & Crafts Classes
  • Youth Conferences
  • Children's Powwow
  • Strengthening The Circle: Workshops for Parents
