Kelly Elementary School

Kelly Elementary
is located in southeast Portland and will soon be close to a new mass transit station. The school was built in 1953 and is home to approximately 470 K–5 students who come from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Kelly staff and students benefit from a number of partnerships with community agencies. Our highly qualified staff works hard to provide targeted instruction for our students using a variety of strategies. Kelly students have made consistent progress in math, reading and writing on statewide assessments over the last four years.

Our purpose, in partnership with families and our community, is to provide rich educational opportunities with high expectations for every child in a safe and nurturing environment that fosters critical thinking, celebrates diversity and promotes lifelong learning and social responsibility.

Kelly has a Russian immersion kindergarten class - 21 students, 15 of them are English speakers, 6 are Russian speakers. 70% of their school day is in Russian - they learn how to speak, read and write in Russian by learning regular kindergarten curriculum. 30% of the day is in English - literacy and special classes like PE, music and library. Next year we are planning to take these students to 1st grade and open a new kindergarten class. We are currently looking for applicants for kindergarten and 1st grade classes.

We host visitors every Wednesday morning for tours of our classrooms. Please, call to schedule visits: 503-314-8554 Natalia Gunther.
