PPS Mandarin Chinese Immersion
Portland Public Schools (PPS) Mandarin Chinese Immersion is committed to creating a sustainable, agile, and replicable model for K-12 Mandarin Chinese education in the United States, where we strive for all students to achieve high academic performance and advanced proficiency as bilingual, bi-literate citizens with deep cultural awareness.
PPS Mandarin Chinese Immersion is structured on the total language learning approach incorporating three key elements:
Content-Based Instruction: Regular academic subjects, such as math and social studies, are taught in Mandarin Chinese.
Explicit Language Instruction: With a focus on language and literacy for communicative purposes, meta-linguistic skills are incorporated in instruction and learning.
Experiential Learning Practices: Students engage in real, meaningful life experiences that require them to practice their language skills and cultural awareness.
The PPS Mandarin Chinese Immersion Program is part of the Oregon K-16 Chinese Flagship.
