School board approves new high school boundaries

Jan. 20, 2011

Beginning in September, students in the Jefferson Cluster will have guaranteed access to two high schools, while all Sunnyside K-8 School students will be assigned to Franklin High School.

The Portland School Board approved the boundaries unanimously Jan. 24. These are the final boundary decisions related to the design of the PPS High School System.

Also at the meeting, board members elected Pam Knowles and Trudy Sargent to serve as school board co-chairs for the next six months.

Jefferson dual assignment zone

The board vote formally establishes the Jefferson Dual Assignment Zone -- providing students in the Jefferson Cluster guaranteed access to the Jefferson High School – Middle College for Advanced Studies and one of three community comprehensive high schools, Grant, Madison or Roosevelt.

Beginning in fall 2011:
  • Students residing in the attendance boundaries of Beach K-8, Woodlawn PK-8, Chief Joseph PK-5 and Ockley Green K-8 schools have a dual assignment to Roosevelt High School.
  • The Faubion PK-8 School attendance boundary is split between Madison High School and Roosevelt because of the large geographic area of the boundary. The north section, including Hayden Island and Delta Park, and areas north of the slough, have a dual assignment to Roosevelt. The eastern section including the Concordia area and areas south of the slough have a dual assignment to Madison.
  • Vernon PK-8 School has a dual assignment to Madison.
  • Humboldt PK-8 and King PK-8 have a dual assignment to Grant High School.
  • Boise-Eliot PK-8, already assigned to Grant as its community comprehensive, receives a dual assignment to Jefferson Middle College.
The primary criteria used to determine the proposed community comprehensive school assignments were:
  • Enrollment stability: Balancing enrollment among Grant, Madison and Roosevelt high schools
  • Proximity: Maximizing the number of students whose comprehensive choice is the closest school to their home.
  • Student impact: Minimizing the number of elementary/PK-8 boundary areas that receive new high school assignments
Franklin boundary expands

School board members also voted to assign all students residing in the Sunnyside K-8 attendance area to Franklin High School. The move allows all Sunnyside neighborhood students to attend the same high school. Previously, a small number of students were assigned to Cleveland High School.
