Sustainability Coordinators

What is a Sustainability Coordinator?

The SC at each school…

  • Is the Resource and Energy Conservation Coordinator's contact person.
  • Informs the school community of the recycling guidelines.
  • Answers questions or directs questions to Resource Conservation staff.
  • Is invited to the bi-monthly district-wide SC meetings.
  • Could be a teacher, librarian, staff person, principal, part-time teacher, AmeriCorps member, or parent.

A lot of our SCs in Portland think beyond recycling and champion great sustainability efforts…

  • Raising awareness about resource conservation.
  • Running recycling competitions.
  • Making sustainability boards in hallways.
  • Increasing recycling programs to include batteries, cell phones, toner cartridges and/or fluorescent bulbs and ballasts.
  • Leading student environmental clubs or staff environmental committees.
  • Completing Oregon Green School applications to get their school certified.
  • Running school gardens.
  • Organizing work parties to collect litter and/or maintain bioswales.
  • Organizing washable tray programs.
  • Starting worm bins and/or composting programs.
