Work Samples:  A “Dual Purpose"

To reflect new state requirements, work samples now serve two purposes:  to provide the required local performance assessments and  to allow students who have not met the requirements on the OAKS Assessment to demonstrate proficiency on the Essential Skills of Reading, Writing and Math for an Oregon High School Diploma.

Below is a table summarizing the differences between local performance assessments and essential skills alternative assessments.

Local Performance Assessments:

  • Required for ALL students
  • Once each during HS
  • Writing, Math, Speaking, Science Inquiry only
  • Students must complete, but not pass

Essential Skills Alternative Assessments:

  • State allows for students who do not meet OAKS
  • Recommended for students who “nearly meet”
  • Reading, Writing, Math only
  • Students must pass using state scoring guide.
For graduation, all students will need to demonstrate their proficiency in the Essential Skills of reading (beginning with the class of 2012), writing (beginning with the class of 2013), mathematics (beginning with the class of 2014), and speaking.

If students are not able to achieve passing scores on OAKS, they can demonstrate their proficiency in the Essential Skills by completing Work Samples in the categories below:
. The primary method for demonstrating these Essential Skills is through passing scores on the OAKS.  The passing OAKS scores are Reading (236), Writing (40), and Math (236).
