Dual Obligation in Serving English Language Learners (ELLs)

Students eligible for ESL services need both English Language Development (ELD) and Sheltered Instruction (SI).  ELD is a subject in and of itself with its own state standards. Students are explicitly taught how to speak, listen, read, and write in English. Sheltered Instruction (SI) is about making content courses accessible to students who are not proficient in English.

ELD - English Language Development (mostly for ESL teachers) - information on instructional materials by grade level, on OR Standards and curriculum alignment, and on supplemental instruction resources including technology

Sheltered Instruction  (mostly for core content teachers, administrators, and parents) - information on components of various curricula (K-5 Literacy, Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, Science, PE and Health)and instructional materials that support sheltered instruction, strategies, SI components, and various SI teaching and research resources.
