Steps:
- Complete Online Application
- Go to www.pilathletics.com under Coaches/Volunteers to see open positions
- Check with Athletic Director at requested school
- Athletic Director informs District Office of hire
- After being hired by school, call Karrin at District Athletics -503-916-3223 to register for HR Coaching Orientation.
- Complete online certifications and classes listed.
To coach for PIL you need the following:

Definitions:
Online Application – Needs to be done yearly by new and returning applicants, except PPS District employees.
HR Orientation – By appointment only at BESC – Call or email Karrin at 503-916-3223 or karring@pps.net for appointment
Ø Background check – you will need addresses for your last 10 years of residence.
Ø I-9 Federal form – Bring original ID’s as listed on the I-9 form - (see HR Coaching Orientation Link above for list)
Ø W-4 form
Ø Sign for and receive Policies and Procedures Acknowledgement Form
Ø Sign Coach’s Responsibility form
Ø Change of address form if you have moved or changed your name.
Ø Fingerprint if new or re-fingerprint every 3 years. You will need picture ID for notary and in Security. Cost of fingerprinting as of July 1, 2010 is $82.
Ø New coaches will need to sign a Discrimination Statement for Title lX.
1st Aid Card & CPR – Paid coaches (except PAT member teachers) need to have a valid 1st aid card and a valid CPR card. District Athletics has classes available. We also accept online 1st aid courses for coaching. Online class is available at www.nfhslearn.com (see below) not sure of the cost.
NFHS Certification – Required for all coaches (volunteers included) by OSAA. This is an online course at www.nfhslearn.com . The name of the class is “Fundamentals of Coaching”. The charge is $50. If you passed the ASEP version prior to August 1, 2007, you will be “grandfathered in”. DO NOT TAKE SPORT SPECIFIC CLASS, and think it will work. “Fundamentals of Coaching” is the required class.
Concussion in Sports Class – Required for all coaches (volunteers included) by OSAA. It needs to be taken yearly. It is an online course available at www.nfhslearn.com and is FREE.

Please note: You need to either read the pdf file or watch the Power Point presentation. Then complete the “Assessment”. The assessment is required in order to receive a completion certificate. The certificate is proof of completion of training and is required by your district. Please allow two (2) weeks for receipt of certificate. All fields must be completed in the survey or your results may not be valid.
Child Abuse Class – This needs to be taken yearly - http://nwonline.nwresd.org/ is the location and it also is a FREE online class. Volunteers are welcome to take this, but not required. Please list School District at "Portland"
Volunteer Background Check – This needs to be done by all new Volunteers and returning volunteers every three (3) years. Fill out form and give it to school to be sent to Security. There is no charge for the volunteer background check. Athletic Directors should know who the school contact person is for this process.
