30th Annual Student Achievement Banquet

Dear Principals of 8th and 12th Grade Students,

We are writing to invite you to participate in this grand opportunity to recognize the outstanding achievements of two of your African/African American students. The Oregon Alliance of Black School Educators (OASBE) is an organization composed of teachers, administrators, and community members who work together to encourage African American youth to realize their ability to succeed academically. As an organization, we realize the importance of honoring graduating 8th graders and high school seniors for their community service, leadership, and scholarship. Each year we continue to be humbled by the support that schools show toward these students as well.

We are pleased to announce that the 30th Annual Student Achievement Banquet will be held on Thursday, May 24th, 2012; and we hope that your school will be represented! This event is the largest recognition banquet for students of African descent in the State of Oregon and it is our hope that you will join us in this celebration. The OABSE Banquet includes entertainment, dinner and recognition on the campus of Concordia University. Also, graduating high school seniors who represent their school may apply for scholarships, which will be presented the evening of the banquet.

Within the next week all PK-8, Middle School, and High School Administrators will receive information about this important banquet (in a bright orange envelope). Please take a few moments to fill out the nomination form and return to the OABSE organization by April 1.

Please feel free to contact Principal LaShawn Lee at x78750 if you have additional questions or concerns.

Drinking Fountains in schools

Health and Safety is taking samples from drinking fountains in schools where we have found missing or incomplete water quality data in our database. Prior to sampling, a Health and Safety employee flushes the building at night, when occupants have stopped using water. We let the water sit overnight, then sample in the morning before occupants start using the water. An independent certified lab performs the test.

If test results show elevated levels of lead in a fountain, we will replace the fountain fixture and when warranted, install a filter. Until that time, we will have the custodian flush the fountain(s) to clear contaminants.

Students and staff should drink from the water fountains, not the faucets. Kitchen staff are flushing water from sinks used for food preparation and drinking water for meals. Kindergarten rooms and nurses rooms also have been tested. You can access drinking fountain results (includes before and after for fountains that were remediated) for your school at: http://www.pps.k12.or.us/news-c/water/index.php.
